Worried about how your going to keep your sanity intact and the kids entertained over the winter school holidays? Relax. There is so much on in Christchurch over the holidays that your only problem will be how to fit everything in.

Have a cracker night

Get the school holidays off to a cracking start at our Winter Fireworks Spectacular.

Come along to New Brighton on Saturday 9 July for some kai from local vendors and a cracker fireworks display set to modern kiwi classics.

The fireworks display, which will take place from the end of New Brighton Pier, will start at 7pm.

KidsFest time

KidsFest has been entertaining the kids of Christchurch for decades and each year it seems to get bigger and better.

The two-week festival runs throughout the school holidays and is packed with events and activities across Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Selwyn and Waimakariri to keep the kids entertained.

You can find details of all the KidsFest events and how to get tickets on the KidsFest website.

Holiday fun at the libraries

Our libraries have got you covered these holidays with a host of fun programmes and activities for the kids.

They can be a librarian for a morning, learn all about shadow puppetry, discover the world of ancient mythologies, take part in a pirate-theme treasure hunt, design their own board game, build a Minecraft world, and make their own arts and crafts.

You can find details of all the libraries school holiday activities on the Christchurch City Libraries website.

Calling all Harry Potter fans

The Court Theatre is taking on the ultimate challenge this month of condensing all seven Harry Potter books (and a real-life games of Quidditch) into a hilarious 70 minutes of entertainment.

Its production of Potted Potter will have you roaring with laughter and is a great treat for the kids these holidays. The show is described as being perfect for ages six to Dumbledore (who is very old indeed).

Tickets range in price from $30 to $37 and are available through The Court Theatre’s website.

Bag a bargain

If you’re looking for cheap books, jigsaws and DVDs to keep the kids occupied over the holidays, then make a bee-line for BOOKarama 2022 – the Rotary Club of Bishopdale Burnside’s three-day book sale. It is on at the YMCA Recreational Centre in Bishopdale from 8 to 10 July.

A magical musical tale

If you remember listening to Badjelly the Witch as a child, you and the kids will love the CSO’s musical take on Spike Milligan’s story of the “baddest witch in the world’.

CSO Presents: Badjelly the Witch will take the kids on a musical adventure and will enchant the young and the young at heart. There is only one performance – at 11am on 14 July – so make sure you get in early and book your tickets. Tickets cost $15.

Let it glow

The Matariki Glow Show is back at the Isaac Theatre Royal for the first weekend of the school holidays with an all-new, giant-scale puppet show for tamariki, educators and whānau.

Bigger, better, bolder, with more music and more characters, this is an upbeat show that ‘edu-tains’ and engages the audience for over 50 minutes with patai (questions and answers) afterwards.

Tickets cost $15.50 and can be booked online.

Get inspired with Lego

If you or your child loves making things out of Lego, then make sure you get along to Christchurch Arena on the final weekend of the school holidays for The Christchurch Brick Show.

More than 200 Lego enthusiasts and collectors will be showing their designs, collections and contraptions to inspire creativity and innovation.

Kids will also have the opportunity to try out various Lego-focused activities in Imagination Station’s huge build and learn zone.

Entry costs just $5 and tickets can be ordered online or bought at the door.

That’s not all

We have only scratched the surface with this list of events. You can find details about other events on over the school holidays on our What’s On website.
