A Winter Night Market will fill the foyer of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū on Wednesday.

Expect curious objects, second-hand wares and local crafts from 6pm on Wednesday 22 July, with wine and beer stalls and DJs adding to the mix until 9pm.

Art Gallery Director Blair Jackson is “thrilled to welcome local makers, vendors and collectors to the Gallery for an enjoyable night of interesting stalls and great art”.

“The Gallery is part of what makes our city centre vibrant and interesting and these markets are an opportunity to get a unique, social shopping fix, with great local food and wine alongside our exceptional new exhibitions and Gallery tours.”

Ceramics, jewellery, clothes, cards, crafts and notebooks will all be on offer at the stalls, along with wine, beer, second-hand books and a record fair.

A pop-up Universo food cart and a drop-in origami workshop will add to the market setting.

All Art Gallery exhibitions will be open until 9pm.

“Among the highlights are our new collection exhibition, Te Wheke, and a large retrospective show, Louise Henderson: From Life,” Mr Jackson says.

“Gallery curators will lead a walk-through of Te Wheke while short guided tours will cover the works of Louise Henderson.”

CoCA will also be open next door to present a selection of works from Christchurch Art Gallery’s online video project from lockdown, Spheres, with winter comfort food also available.

“While we’re always open on a Wednesday night, this is something a bit special and different. The response has been remarkable and we can’t wait to see everyone here.”

The Art Gallery plans to host a second pop-up market on Wednesday, 26 August.
