Moving to New Zealand is a big decision that you will probably not regret when you get here. This country is great. It’s not a safe fix from the everyday problems our lives bring us but the relaxed and calm nature of how life is here is a far cry from many of the places I have been around the world.
If you want to become a Kiwi there are things that you need to doing to be able to move here and become part of our multi cultural environment.
To plan for your trip out here there are plenty of websites out there to work through. But the main one you need to look at is The Immigration New Zealand Website From here just simply find out if you qualify to become a Kiwi. If you do you can then start to plan and look forward to when you want to come.
When you get to New Zealand it will be daunghting. To look for accommodation you need to go to either realestate.co.nz or trademe.co.nz where you will find a whole line up of properties for rent and to purchase. My advice would be to use trade me to find a rental property because you wont know where you want to be when you get here. Give yourself some time when you get here to look around and keep your eyes open.
Employment at the moment is a tough one. There are still plenty of jobs out there. But they are tough and most of them are highly competitive simply because of the economic hard times that the entire world is experiencing. There are systems in place in New Zealand that can at least try to help you find employment. The seek website usually has a great line up of positions available at any given time.
New Zealand is quite different all over the country. Each part of the country offers different aspects that will please all different type of people. Here s a run down of some of the things to look out for:
Let’s start at the top of the North Island. Whangerai is a beautiful little city! Lots of sunshine and beaches.
Another great place to live is Auckland! The largest city in NZ. As mentioned before, some parts of Auckland are not so nice but most of it is lovely.
Auckland’s North Shore city is probably the best place to live in the city and it was also voted the safest part of NZ! Suburbs like Takapuna, Hauraki, Torbay, Mairangi Bay, Brown’s Bay and Devonport are stunning! Great schools there too I hear. The North Shore is home to Auckland’s more affulent people so the schools there are some of the best in New Zealand.
Other great areas in Auckland include Mission Bay, Orakei, Kohimarama, Saint Heliers, Remuera, Greenlane, Ellerslie, Meadowbank and Saint Johns. These are all located East of the city.
Just to the South of the city places like Epsom and Mount Eden are both very lovely.
Inner city suburbs such as Parnell, Herne Bay, Saint Marys Bay, Freemans Bay and Grey Lynn are again all very nice and close to the city!
Other nice suburbs around Auckland include Titirangi (South west of the city), Howick and Botany Downs (both South East of the city).
However, if you’re not into city life than Auckland may not be for you.
Next good place to live would be Hamilton. It is essentially are huge country town. Lovely people and scenery although it may be a little boring but the schools there are meant to be great and it would be a very family friendly city to bring up your children.
Just outside of Hamilton is the safe, pretty little town of Cambridge. This town is nice. Its a very clean place.
If you’re into the whole beach scene then Tauranga is the place for you. Mount Manganui (a suburb of Tauranga) is one of the nicest beach I’ve ever been too! Lots of young people there out enjoying the water! Lots of nice houses and nice looking people haha. lol
Whakatane in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is yet another amazing place to live. It’s a small town with around 15 000 people and it’s right on a river and right on the beach. Very laid back, safe and friendly.
New Plymouth is a great city to live in! It was recently voted one of the best places in the NZ to live in! I lived here for a few years and it has everything you need. Although a little isolated from the Rest of New Zealand it has a great feel and is a lovely place to live. The people are nice and its safe and very very pretty.
It has fantastic surf with a nice big snowy mountain in the background!
If you’re looking for a safe little quite place then Havelock North in Hawke’s Bay is for you. It is near Hastings (not so flash) but it is also near Napier which gives you two large towns to go to right on your door step.
I find Palmerston North would be a great city to live in. It is a little boring, and wet and windy lol but the schools there are some of the best in NZ. There’s also a huge university there which would give your kids plenty of oppunities for the future.
Wellington is yet another lovely plave to live in. If I lived in Wellington I would live in Johnsonvill, Oriental Bay, Miramar, Seatoun, Lyall Bay, Haitaitai or Mount Victoria. All really nice places.
On the South Island, Nelson is a place worth living! Nice beaches good food and friendly people.
If you can afford it, Queenstown would be ideal! As would Wanaka and Alexandra. All small country towns with good scenery.
In the South Island if you are looking for a casual, nice, laid back life is the place you can achieve this. Christchurch is a great place, Its the 2nd biggest city in NZ (about 400 000+ people) so you have that city feel but at the same time it’s really not a big city.
Christchurch is central so you can travel down to the great tourist spots like Wanaka and Queenstown or up to Kaikora or Nelson. There are beaches in Christchurch and is very close to the ski fields.
No matter where you go I think you will love NZ, its a peaceful and relaxed place to live, a great place to raise children, and beautiful.
