Karl Russell receives Outstanding Contribution Award
Longstanding advocate of freshwater and mahinga kai, Karl Russell was presented with a Canterbury Regional Council Outstanding Contribution Award at a stirring ceremony on Tuesday 16 September 2025.
Karl collaborated with us and territorial authorities across Mid and South Canterbury for many years and helped to establish Aoraki Environmental Consultancy – where he still serves as a member of the Board.
He was also an early member of the Ashburton Water Management Zone Committee, pioneering a form of collaborative water governance including local and regional councils, industry stakeholders, Ngāi Tahu and the wider community.
Council Chair Craig Pauling presented Karl with the award at the council offices in Christchurch in front of gathered whanau, friends, councillors and staff.
“Karl has been at the forefront of natural resource and environmental management on behalf of Arowhenua Rūnanga and Ngāi Tahu whānui for many years,” Chair Pauling said.
“His contribution to creating and upholding environmental solutions – particularly in retaining and enhancing mahinga kai – are examples of kaitiakitanga and rangatiratanga.”
Pauling said many words had been used to describe Karl, but the one that summed him up the best was “kind”.
“You take a chance on young people and share your knowledge.
“When I first met you, I knew nothing, and you’ve taught me so much in all the time we’ve spent together.”
Karl said he was humbled by the words said and wanted to acknowledge that his work was always done in collaboration with others.
“I have invited people here today because their achievements need to be honoured as well,” he said.
“I have a wealth of knowledge that must be passed on. I have never done anything in my life that would not benefit my mokopuna. I deeply appreciate receiving this award.”
