Going green is a concept that has been receiving a lot of attention lately. I’d be lying if I said the concept was gaining rave revues. The truth is, many are at odds with regard to the impact that going green could have, with regards to it’s timeliness to effectively impact our environment or it’s ability to save those who choose this option any money at all. While it’s true that going green often presents hefty up front pricing with promises of savings on the back-end, all endeavors to go green don’t have to break the bank.
The good news is, even ordinary homemakers can do something to help the environment heal. Adapting a green household is not only eco-friendly but in most cases the money savings will come through.
Energy saving around the home does not have to be all about installation of equipments that will help you generate the amount of power you need. It can also be about having enough discipline around the house, avoiding the habits that cost you precious energy for nothing. Here are simple tips to assume a green household and help you save energy and money in the process.
Tip #1: Maximize the use of natural lighting in every corner of the house. Open up your curtains and let the sunshine pass through. This way, you will require less electricity to keep your home lighted up.
Tip #2: Use electrical lighting sparingly. Turn off the lights in the room when you are not using them. You cannot be all over the place at the same time so you do not have to leave the place lighted up at once. Get into the energy-saving habit of turning off the lights when you are leaving the room or when you are not using them.
Tip #3: Always keep your television, game consoles, and other appliances completely turned off when they are not in use. Avoid leaving them on Stand By mode. Doing so costs you electricity and a significant amount of money.
Tip #4: Put on a full load to your washing machine and dishwasher before you turn them on. Turning them on with just a few items on is a waste of energy.
Tip #5: Invest for the insulation of your home so you will require less energy to heat up during winter.
Tip #6: Make sure you ventilate your home so that the any build up of moisture from a well insulated home doesn’t occur. This makes your home more efficient. Products like carpet, cabinetry, plywood and paint can contain petroleum products or formaldehyde and off gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). There are now many products available that give off little or no VOCs so that as well as a ventilated house you can have clean healthy home.
Many have suggested that going green is the way to economical and ecological recovery. Some see it as a way to decrease their carbon footprint, and others see it as a means to create new job opportunities in a waning economy. Whatever your reasons for going green there will be substantial gains personally to be made.
