Discover what’s on in Canterbury this weekend

Posted on January 8, 2021 by CCC

Cool off in the pool, tackle a tough run, catch the cricket under lights, explore the city or simply sit back and soak up the sounds.

Party at the pool in Lyttelton

Chill out at the summer pool party at the Norman Kirk Memorial Pool in Lyttelton on Sunday from noon to 5pm.

Try out the king slide and obstacle course during a fun day in the sun in the 25-metre outdoor pool while the younger family members wade into the paddling pool.

Super Smash at Hagley Oval

Go into bat for the Super Smash clash as the Canterbury Kings side swings into action against the Central Stags in the first local cricket match under lights at Hagley Oval on Sunday evening.

The Magicians will take on the Hinds earlier in the day. Reserve free tickets online.

Tangled tale centre stage

Fairy-tale Tangled comes to Christchurch from Sunday, with Rapunzel letting down her golden hair on stage at the Merivale Lane Theatre until Saturday, 16 January. Book tickets online.

Aotearoa Ultra Marathon

Step up for the Aotearoa Ultra Marathon across Banks Peninsula on Saturday.

Starting at Little River, the event powers up to Akaroa Harbour before traversing Wainui, French Farm, Duvauchelle, Pigeon Bay, Port Levy and Mount Herbert to finish in Halswell Quarry.

The three distance events range from a 15-kilometre warm-up from Gebbies Pass to the 101km ultra marathon open to individuals or a two-person changeover team.

Book a starting spot online.

Pop Up Penguins Sculpture Trail

Find the colourful penguins popping up across the city.

Follow the sculpture trail to discover 50 large penguins – decorated by artists – on city streets, along with 65 smaller birds – decorated by school students – in indoor spaces such as libraries.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Wander into the wild as Canterbury Museum hosts the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition direct from the Natural History Museum in London.

The exhibition on level one features nearly 100 photographs.

Meanwhile, The Great Museum Santa Search ends this weekend, with miniature figures hidden around the museum.
