Bad behaviour towards For Sale signs

Posted on June 30, 2008 by swiggs

Over the past few months I have been noticing a disturbing trend in some places in regards to our For Sale signs. Lately there have been a few properties go on the market in some of the less desirable parts of town. But all be said they are still good houses and need to be marketed as if they were the best.

But something I have noticed is the total disrespect from some of the neighbourhoods in regards to the for sale signs. I have one property that I have replaced the sign three times. And the house two doors down on with another agency I just had to hammer back up today because it was ripped down. Now I am unsure why people would do this but it seems to me that it is becoming a fair bit more common lately. Or I might just be noticing it more.

So I went for a walk for 5 hours today around some of the streets today just checking out some of the more active areas in terms of real estate and wanted to check out the state of all for sale signs. And I was kind of amazed. I found 3 signs that had from what it looked like ripped down recently. 4 signs with graffiti on them and there was 4 signs that to me looked like they had been fixed up after some sort of mishap and there were 2 signs that we broken. That is a total of 13 signs that have been tampered with.

And recently we had an empty house we had on the market broken into. They stole the key out of the lockbox and helped themselves to the house over the weekend. Not very good stuff.

This is something that I never really noticed before but it has stated to come to my attention. I am unsure if its higher because of the higher number of signs out now with the numbers of houses on the market increasing or what.

Is there any more of this happening around the country? If so let us know about.

Welcome to real estate. Sorry to spoil your day but you’ll get used to it as it part of what we have to do. I’m not saying it’s right but it’s just a sign of the times, excuse the pun. It’s been happening for the 14 years I’ve been selling. Come and see what they do to signs in Auckland, they’ve made it into and art form in this city … sorry another pun.

One way around this may be the use of a company like ABC Photosigns here in Manukau City who use steel signs and replace them whenever they are graffitied or damaged. When these are used we only need to ring them as replacement is part of their deal.

    Thanks for comments Deon, appreciated.
My signs get attacked from time to time and in my early days it really upset me. Now my view is more relaxed,I quickly get them repaired or replaced as my only objective is seeing that “Sold”. They only win if you let them!

With my military background I quickly learnt to take things with a grain of salt. But I just cant fathem why people would damage them etc. Its just beyond me to a point.
