All aboard the Peace Train

All aboard the Peace Train

Posted on September 5, 2023 by CCC

The miniature train was donated by the Yusaf Island Foundation in early 2021, in recognition of the extraordinary response of support and compassion that followed the terror attacks on March 15, 2019.

The free to ride train operates along a track in Christchurch Botanic Gardens, following the loop pathway around the playground following the Ōtākaro-Avon River.

This season, due to popular demand, the train will be operating every Sunday rather than fortnightly.

“The train is a wonderful addition to the Botanic Gardens and sends such an important message of peace and love,” says Christchurch City Council Parks Programmes and Partnership Manager Dr Roslyn Kerr.

“Riding it brings such joy to so many – there are huge smiles on the faces of anyone who hops on the train!” says Dr Kerr.

The gift came as Yusaf saw the New Zealand response to the mosque attacks as a beautiful lesson, and an example of the best side of humanity. It was conditional on the train being free to ride for the citizens of Christchurch, and that it was to run in a central location.

The Peace Train is run by volunteers, and Dr Kerr says more are always welcomed.

“We have the most wonderful, dedicated group of volunteers who drive the train, and we’re so grateful for their enthusiasm and creating such a great experience for the public,” says Dr Kerr.

Hop on the Peace Train between 10am and 2pm each Sunday, with each ride taking approximately eight minutes. The train leaves from behind the kiosk in Christchurch Botanic Gardens. The season will run from 3 September to April 2024.
