From cold snow to hot jazz: The city’s pumping this weekend

The Blackcaps are in town and there’s huskies in Cashel Mall! Here’s some ideas to keep you entertained over the weekend.

Winter Fun – Chill in the City

Winter comes to town with a series of snow-and-ice themed outdoor activities everyone will enjoy.

These are happening on Saturday and Sunday 10am – 5pm in several locations in and around Cashel Street City Mall – including a Snowy Winter Wonderland and toboggan run down a mound of real snow in the Riverside carpark off Lichfield Street. Be in quick because the snow will melt! There’s also:

  • Ice skating – $5 for a half-hour skate
  • Hagguland rides – gold coin donation
  • Selfies with huskies and Antarctic virtual reality experience – gold coin donation

Blackcaps Mace Tour

Celebrate the team’s World Test Championship win when the Blackcaps Mace Tour arrives in Christchurch on Saturday.  Get a photo with some of the players and the winning trophy – the mace – at the Town Hall 1pm- 3pm.

Ghostlight Midwinter Film Series

Isaac Theatre Royal is screening three hugely popular films on Saturday starting with all-time classic The Lion King at 10am. That’s followed at 3pm by another ‘90’s favourite The Shawshank Redemption. And if you’ve got the winter blues and feel like you’re pining for summer nights there’s a sing-a-long screening of iconic musical Grease at 7pm. Tickets $10-$15

The Isolation Mixtape

Seven composers present seven pieces of brand new musical theatre, performed by top singers alongside the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Friday 7.30pm at The Piano. Cost $30

Fireside chat: Kate Sheppard – the noble bohemian

A fireside lecture with historian Margaret Lovell-Smith will explore the qualities that made Kate Sheppard a successful leader and what motivated her fight for justice and equality. Sunday 2.30 at Kate Sheppard House. Entry is free.

Jazz, Jazz, Jazz

Get your jazz hands out people. Under the Kitchen Sink are putting a modern twist on jazz standards at Ara Music Arts on Friday 6pm-7pm, entry is free and all ages welcome. Then the majestic All Girl Big Band takes the stage at 12Bar from 8pm. Cost $15.
