Road closures for Central City marathon

Road closures for Central City marathon

The 10.55km loop course takes competitors around North Hagley Park, through city streets and alongside the scenic Ōtākaro Avon River.

There will be a managed entry point where Hereford Street intersects oxford Terrace.

This will allow access into the six blocks surrounding Gloucester Street and Worcester Boulevard, for residents and visitors to The Art Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora and Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū.

A managed exit route out to Salisbury Street via Cranmer Square will be signposted.

Redeveloped last year to be contained in the central city, the course proved popular and will be almost identical this year, with a few minor adjustments, says Race Director Calum Nicholson.

“The flat course is faster for participants’ race times, and the compact area makes it better for spectators and brings more foot traffic to local businesses.”

From 5am to 2.30pm, road closures – as shown on the map below – will be in place to prevent traffic from crossing the marathon course.

Christchurch City Council Manager of Events and Arts Lucy Blackmore says the four avenues are the best way for people to travel around the city. Those coming into the city are advised to allow more time for their travel and to approach from the south or east.

“The Central City is open for business, and we encourage supporters and city-goers to come in and join the festivities. Because it’s a loop track, there’ll be lots to see – the marathon racers will do the loop four times!” Ms Blackmore says.

The Crossing, Lichfield Street and Hereford Street parking buildings will be open.

The Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon is on Sunday 21 April.

A full list of road closures is available on the Council website. Learn more about the event on the Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon website.
