Christchurch – Tournament Highlights
Christchurch’s RWC 2011 quarter-finals weekend is going to be massive.
As well as these two top games, Stadium Christchurch will feature five pool matches and the region will be home-base during the tournament for teams from Australia, England, Argentina, Scotland, Georgia and Russia.
Christchurch is at the heart of New Zealand rugby and the Canterbury province has a proud history in the game. RWC 2011 will be right at home here in the city.

Stadium Christchurch has just undergone a $60 million redevelopment in preparation for RWC 2011 and is ready to host 45,000 rugby fans at each match.

Canterbury – Rugby History
This region has long been renowned for rugby excellence, with the Christchurch-based Super 14 franchise claiming 7 titles in 14 seasons of the “Super” competition.
The Crusaders franchise has built on 12
7 years of rugby tradition – a heritage of hallowed turf and household names.

Formed in 1863, the Christchurch
Football Club is the oldest in New Zealand; the country’s first rugby football union was also established in Canterbury, in 1879.
Canterbury has the most clubs of all New Zealand rugby unions with 47. The union has produced countless All Blacks, including Andrew Mehrtens, who holds the record for the most All B
lack test points (967 in 70 Tests). Robbie Deans, Wayne Smith, Justin Marshall, Dan Carter and Richie McCaw are also prominent figures in Canterbury’s rugby history – and future.
