Council and Wharenui Swim Club to continue working together

Posted on June 25, 2021 by CCC

Christchurch City Council has opted to put a hold on plans to decommission Wharenui Pool at this time after strong public support during the Long Term Plan process to keep the facility open.

The Council, as part of the Long Term Plan which was adopted today, has agreed to work with Wharenui Swim Club on options for the club to operate the facility at no additional cost to ratepayers.

Council will maintain budget to offset risk of a pool plant failure with any unspent funds to be carried forward year on year.

The next step will see staff develop an operational and capital plan with the swim club, which would inform a future decision of the ongoing operation of the pool.

The pool was initially identified in the Draft Long Term Plan to close in line with the opening of Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre in 2023.
