You’ll be picnicking in eco-friendly style if you’re the lucky winner of a Love Our Lakes picnic pack, put together to encourage people to look after our favourite lakeside spots in the Upper Waitaki area.

A handy backpack filled with re-usable picnic gear, as well as coffee cups, drink bottles, Love Our Lakes hand sanitiser, and doggy poo bags for any furry friends, is up for grabs and you can enter by visiting the Environment Canterbury Facebook page and sharing your favourite spot for a picnic before 12 noon on Friday 5 February 2021. Love Our Lakes is a promotional campaign to encourage recreational lake users to respect the environment. It is run by the locally-based Upper Waitaki Water Zone Committee, who focus on protecting water quality.

Simple things you can do to Love Our Lakes

Following these steps will reduce your impact on the water quality of our lakes and protect the native plants, animals and birds that live here as well.

• Always use the public toilets…one poo can close the lake.
• Dispose of any rubbish responsibly.
• Wash any clothes or dishes away from the lake.
• Take measures not to spread aquatic weeds – Check, Clean Dry.
